Ring in the New Year: 1983

For New Year's Eve in December 1982, we decided to celebrate the new year in a very low-key way. We invited one couple with whom we often socialized over to watch a movie, visit, eat, and generally amuse ourselves. At about 10 o'clock, they said, "Well, we're going to leave now. We need to get some sleep." And they left.

We stared at each other in disbelief. Who goes home from a New Year's get-together at 10 o'clock? And if they do, is it pathalogical party-pooperdom or appallingly bad manners (because they broke up the party)? After shaking our heads in wonderment, we decided to go to my family's party at my folks (just a mile away), so we told the sitter and jumped in the car. It may not have been as low-key as we had planned, but it was good company. Happy New Year!
